Welcome Message

Forty years after hosting the III World Congress on Gestational Trophoblastic Disease, the International Society for the Study of Trophoblastic Disease (ISSTD) returns to Rio de Janeiro for the XXIII World Congress on Gestational Trophoblastic Disease. Set in a city recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World, this congress will once again bring together experts from across the globe to discuss an uncommon disease that nevertheless affects women in a profound and life-altering way.

Since 1986, the field of gestational trophoblastic disease has evolved remarkably. We have achieved greater uniformity in diagnostic criteria, established the FIGO scoring system worldwide as the standard tool for staging and therapeutic guidance, incorporated new chemotherapy regimens, and witnessed the advent of immunotherapy in selected clinical scenarios. Perhaps most importantly, we have consolidated the reference center model as a cornerstone strategy to centralize expertise, optimize outcomes, and ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.

In parallel with these scientific advances, the ISSTD itself has grown and matured. The Society has welcomed new members, expanded international collaborations, and reached new countries and emerging leaders, reinforcing its truly global mission. Yet, much work remains to be done, particularly in addressing inequities in access to care, especially in the Global South. These challenges, along with many other scientific, clinical, and organizational topics, will be central themes of our discussions in Rio de Janeiro.

The Scientific Program will be led by Professor Neil Horowitz as Chair of the Scientific Committee, while Professor John Coulter will coordinate the submission and evaluation of free communications, further underscoring the high scientific standards of the meeting and anticipating an outstanding program. Your participation will be essential to strengthen knowledge exchange and collective action toward improving care for women affected by gestational trophoblastic disease worldwide.

Beyond the scientific program, participants can look forward to an exceptional cultural experience in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro. In November, springtime offers pleasant weather, beautiful beaches, and a city whose natural and cultural beauty truly shines. For all these reasons, your presence will be key to making this congress a memorable and impactful event.

You are warmly invited to Brazil. Rio de Janeiro looks forward to welcoming you with open arms.
